Almighty God sustains the universe. He gives life to every creature. Hell judge every person to determine his or her eternal destiny. Why would we argue with Him? Or worse, why would we boast about doing so?

One day we’ll be in heaven, standing before God’s magnificent throne. Myriads upon myriads of angels will be shouting His praises, and all the saints will be lying prostrate before Him shouting, “Holy! Holy! Holy!” At that moment, numerous thoughts may pass through our minds, but “wrestling” with God will not be one of them! We will see God as He is, and we’ll finally have a crystal-clear understanding of who we are in comparison.

Our problem in this life is that we don’t know God well, so we misguidedly believe we can do something as ludicrous as grapple with our Creator!

We have no justifiable reason to wrestle with Him. “God is love” (1 John 4:8). Everything He does emanates from perfect love. Every word God speaks is characterized by pure, undefiled love. Why would we struggle against someone like that? Those who struggle to relate to perfect love simply do not understand God. When we become angry or bitter toward God, it reveals that we don’t understand His heart and His compassion.

Jesus said, “He who does not love Me does not keep My words” (John 14:24). He made it clear: those who love Him obey Him. Out of an intimate walk with God flows spontaneous obedience. When we wrangle over doing what God says, that isn’t an obedience problem but a love problem.

I know people who have come to love God so much that they obey Him as the angels do—instantly and without question. They trust Him totally. Even if something doesn’t make sense to them, they don’t second-guess Him. God spoke, so they gave their car to someone in need, sold their business, quit their lucrative job to work at a much lower salary for a Christian organization, forgave someone who hurt them deeply, enrolled in seminary, endured suffering, gave away their savings, or moved to another country.

As I travel, I hear countless testimonies from people who knew God was leading them to make a radical change in their life, and they didn’t hesitate to obey because they were certain they could trust God completely with their life.

O UR C HRISTLIKENESS

Another reflection of how well you know Christ is the degree to which you’re becoming like Him. When you spend a great amount of time with someone, you can’t help being influenced by that person. You take on that individual’s mannerisms and adopt his or her expressions.

My wife and I have experienced this. As I mentioned earlier, I used to be clueless when she was trying to send me discreet signals. But we’ve been married for twenty-four years. We’ve spent a lot of time together and have discussed life’s issues in depth. I can mention a certain word now and she’ll burst out laughing because that word represents a funny story. Or she can use a phrase that immediately reminds us of a special moment in our lives.
